Being accused of a crime changes your life in an instant. In many cases, your reputation, future and freedom are all at stake. For this reason, you need to hire a trustworthy attorney who has experience representing individuals in these types of cases.

About Criminal Charges in Ohio

The state of Ohio divides criminal charges into two main categories: misdemeanors and felonies. While misdemeanors are less serious crimes with lighter sentences, felonies are more serious crimes with harsher sentences.

Misdemeanors

Misdemeanors in Ohio are further divided into five degrees. Each degree carries different possible penalties.

  • Minor misdemeanors may lead to a fine of up to $150.
  • Fourth degree misdemeanors may lead to up to 30 days in jail and a maximum fine of $250.
  • Third degree misdemeanors may lead to up to 60 days in jail and a maximum fine of $500.
  • Second degree misdemeanors may lead to up to 90 days in jail and a maximum fine of $750.
  • First degree misdemeanors may lead to up to 180 days in jail and a maximum fine of $1000.

Felonies

Felonies in Ohio are further divided into five degrees. As with misdemeanors, the possible sentence depends on the severity of the crime.

  • Fifth degree felonies may lead to up to 12 months in prison and a fine of up to $2,500.
  • Fourth degree felonies may lead to up to 18 months in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
  • Third degree felonies may lead to up to 5 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
  • Second degree felonies may lead to up to 8 years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000.
  • First degree felonies may lead to up to 11 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000.

The charges of murder and aggravated murder don’t fall into any of these categories and may result in harsher sentences, including life in prison without parole.
